In 1998, TIME Magazine compiled a list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century. Estee Lauder was the only woman on the list. In addition, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Quite an accomplishment for a woman born to Hungarian immigrants at the turn of the century. As a young child, she helped out at her father's hardware store, along with the other eight children in the family. Although she dreamed of being an actress, the store taught her a great deal about entrepreneurship and retailing. As she got older, she began working for her uncle, who was a successful chemist who sold beauty products. A young Estee Lauder helped him create his creams, rouge and fragrances and learned the tricks of the beauty trade. After graduating from high school, she remained at her uncle's shop and soon began developing her own creams and lotions, marketing them under his name. She began selling the products at small shops and hair salons, and convinced Saks Fifth Avenue to give her counter space. Word quickly spread and her high-quality products became well known and sought after, even by royalty.
